Moldtelecom general director Viorel Motorniuc
At the end of 2024, Moldtelecom generated sales revenue of 1.657 billion lei; net profit (after taxes) amounted to 159.871 million lei. Moldtelecom transferred 44.64 million lei to the state budget. Compared to 2023, sales revenue increased by 27.692 million lei; net profit – by 70.59 million lei; contributions to the state budget – by 26.047 million lei.
However, if we look at Moldtelecom’s financial results before the COVID-19 epidemic, we can see that the figures do not differ much from today’s figures. Thus, for 2016, sales revenue amounted to 2.23 billion lei and net profit amounted to 72.6 million lei. In 2017, sales revenue was 1.77 billion lei, net profit – 61.8 million lei.
Like some other state-owned enterprises, Moldtelecom has changed six general directors over the past few years. In December 2023, Alexandru Ciubuc (who had been in office for exactly two years) announced his resignation. Viorel Motorniuc was appointed as the new general director in January 2024.
According to the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI), there are three operators in the country, which account for the bulk of services provided – Moldtelecom, Orange Moldova, Moldcell. And there are about 20 other operators.
Moldtelecom provides all types of services: mobile telephony Unite and mobile Internet; high-speed fixed Internet access; interactive television IPTV; fixed telephony.
Moldtelecom has the most powerful Internet network in Moldova, with more than 400 thousand subscribers, the market share in terms of revenue – over 62%. It provides, at speeds up to 1000 Mbps, coverage throughout the country (this is the main advantage over regional Internet providers).
In March 2025, Moldtelecom launched the Internet with a speed of 2.1 Gbps, the fastest connection in Moldova.
The state-owned company has other sources of revenue. First, other operators use its Internet network to transmit data between all districts and cities in the country. This is what is called interconnection of networks between operators.
Moldtelecom’s fiber-optic cable network is connected directly to the global Internet through access points in Germany, Romania and Ukraine with data transmission speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Simply put, the access to the international Internet market is realized through fiber optic cables owned by Moldtelecom. This service is actively used by other operators. This is also a significant source of income for the company.
Today Moldtelecom remains the leader in fixed telephony, with a market share (in terms of profit) of 94%. However, the number of subscribers has decreased. There are several reasons for this. And it is not only because every citizen of the country has a cell phone. A blow for pensioners was the abolition of the preferential tariff of 6 lei per month, as well as the increase of the standard tariff from the previous 24 lei. The tariff from January 2024 was made the same for all – 40 lei per month. Many people had to say goodbye to fixed telephony and today there are about 894 thousand subscribers.
