Accounts of users under the age limit will begin to be blocked on March 28.
High-risk platforms
According to Variety (USA), the ban will apply to “high-risk” platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, Threads, the game Roblox and the streaming service Bigo Live.
The restrictions will be introduced in stages and will be differentiated by age. Children under 13 will only be able to use social media and other platforms that are customized for their age group. Children between 13 and 16 will only have access to “low-risk” services and only with parental consent. Sanctions will be imposed on the platforms and not on the young users or their parents.
In the context of the global trend
The move by Indonesian authorities to restrict children’s access to social media follows Australia becoming the first country in the world to legally ban social media for children under 16, with fines of up to $22.4 million imposed on offending platforms.
Indonesia joins a growing list of countries considering, at the highest levels, the introduction of tough measures to restrict minors’ access to the Web. France, Denmark, Greece and Spain are pushing for measures at the EU level. Similar measures are also being considered by the UK and Indian authorities.
