F6 expert Sergei Zolotukhin told RIA Novosti about such tactics of attackers.
The next stage, according to him, may be the hacking of the vacuum cleaner itself. In this case, it is almost impossible to visually determine the compromise – the device will continue to function in normal mode.
As the expert noted, devices with cameras and sound recording function can potentially be used to collect information about the owners. In the future, such data can be used for blackmail or manipulation.
Moreover, according to his assessment, the collection of information is possible even in cases where such functions are formally restricted at the software level. “Since in the modern world many devices use a camera, microphone and various sensors to expand functionality and convenience, we can state that we have entered the era of technically possible full transparency,” summarized Sergey Zolotukhin.
Earlier, Kaspersky Lab warned about similar techniques. The company’s experts reported on the possibility of using smart pet feeders for data collection purposes – many of them, like robotic vacuum cleaners, are equipped with cameras. In addition, such devices can be used as an entry point for attacks on other gadgets in the home network, including smartphones and computers.
