Scandal at the Louvre: photo of Prince Andrew’s arrest hung next to the “Mona Lisa”

Activists staged a performance in the Louvre, hanging a photo of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's detention next to the masterpieces of world art. The action lasted only about fifteen minutes, but managed to attract the attention of visitors to one of the most famous museums in the world, reports Logos Press.

The photo appeared near the Mona Lisa and the Venus of Milos. The organizers – the British group Everyone Hates Elon, which is harshly critical of billionaires and powerful figures – accompanied the photo with the caption “Now he’s sweating,” Euronews writes.

The phrase was a reference to the prince’s interview with the Newsnight program in 2019, where he said he was unable to sweat, refuting Virginia Giuffrè’s accusations.

Giuffré has previously alleged that the Duke of York had a sexual relationship with her when she was a minor and linked his name to financier Geoffrey Epstein. Mountbatten-Windsor himself has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

The occasion for a new wave of public outcry was the publication in the United States of a large array of documents relating to the Epstein case. The materials allegedly include e-mails that may testify to contacts between the prince and the financier during the period when the latter held the post of British Trade Representative.

The photo posted by the activists was taken on February 19 after Mountbatten-Windsor was released from a police station in Norfolk, where he spent 11 hours after being detained on suspicion of abuse of office. A video of the action was posted on Instagram with the caption, “They say ‘hang it in the Louvre’. We did.”

Museum staff promptly removed the image from the wall. Meanwhile, the scandal around the former Duke of York continues to develop: in British political circles discuss possible steps that could affect his position in the line of succession to the throne.
