“According to the estimates we made in connection with the opening of the new subsidiary, the maximum potential is 1 billion cubic meters (total consumption of Right-Bank Moldova) and we could supply 20-30% of the gas imported by the Moldovan state,” Romgaz CEO Răzvan Popescu said.
Romgaz wants to sell gas across the Prut at a higher price than in Romania, where it is obliged to supply it at a regulated price of 120 Romanian lei (24 euros, 463 Moldovan lei)/MWh for households and CHP plants until March 31, 2026.
“The existence of a difference between the prices of natural gas sold in Romania and those in Moldova, which exceeds the transport tariff between the two countries, makes it possible to export the blue fuel to the neighboring country at a higher price than in Romania,” Romgaz said in a press release.
Chisinau-based state trader Energocom SA recently signed its first long-term purchase contract with OMV Petrom, Romania’s largest oil and gas producer, to supply Moldova with gas from the Neptun Deep offshore project, which will start production in 2027. OMV Petrom and Romgaz hold equal shares of 50% each in this concession.
