Rights of EU citizens in Moldova legalized

Legalization of EU citizens in Moldova is simplified by the removal of bureaucracy and other administrative barriers. Both they and their family members enjoy equal rights, including free access to the labor market. For example, the possibility to carry out activities on the basis of an entrepreneurial patent.

These and other provisions of the new Law No. 200/2025 on the free movement and stay on the territory of the Republic of Moldova of EU citizens and their family members entered into force on March 18, 2026.

The law prescribes equal treatment of EU citizens and clear rules for their stay in Moldova. Thus, they were granted the right to stay legally for up to 90 calendar days during any period of 180 calendar days.

This period can be extended if the person does not pose a threat to national security, public order, health and does not become a burden on the social assistance system.

EU citizens are guaranteed rights and obligations in the field of compulsory health insurance, including the right to calculate health insurance contributions in the manner provided for the relevant categories of Moldovan citizens.

They are ensured the rights of social insurance from the date of employment or conclusion of the insurance contract, and against accidents at work and occupational diseases.
