The country shipped more than 69 thousand tons of these agricultural products to foreign markets. In total, in the current marketing season – from July 2024 to March 2025 inclusive – the following were exported
the largest amount of sunflower seeds for the last four seasons – more than 486 thousand tons. Compared to the result of sunflower exports in 2023/24, the increase was 28%, with 2022/23 (about 204 thousand tons) more than doubled. This is evidenced by the results of the analysis of the Agrocereale Association.
In financial terms, sunflower exports in the mentioned period of this year amounted to 4.67 billion lei (in the two previous marketing seasons – 2 and 2.62 billion lei, respectively). In the current marketing year, the average wholesale price for sunflower also increased – up to 9.59 lei/kg. Last MY, the average price was only 7.89 lei/kg. Nevertheless, the maximum median price level (12.83 lei/kg, in 2022/2023) is still far away.
“The growth of sunflower exports should not be interpreted as an absolute success of the agri-food sector of the Republic of Moldova,” notes the author of the study, Iurie Rija. – On the contrary, the large-scale export of raw materials with low added value hides a much less positive phenomenon: the reduction of exports of processed products with higher added value – sunflower oil”.
