According to the head of the ministry during a press club meeting at the Independent Analytical Center “Expert-Grup”, there have been no cases of mass poisonings indicating systemic problems with food safety in Moldova over the past two years. The overwhelming number of poisonings that have caused hospitalizations and ANSA investigations are the carelessness of ordinary people in purchasing, storing and observing hygiene rules while consuming perishable products in the summer heat. “Elementary care and caution can protect consumers from most of the risks, as well as become a very important incentive for producers not to lose integrity, to constantly take care of the safety and quality of food products,” summarized Radu Mustiatica.
In 2024, ANSA carried out inspections of approximately 1 thousand consumer complaints to the agency in connection with suspicions about food safety/quality. Most of the detected violations concerned the sale of food products with expired expiration dates, inaccurate or incomplete information on food labels.
The ANSA safety system provides for three-stage monitoring and control of food: at the level of accompanying documents, labels with information on products, laboratory tests within the framework of the national plan. Consumer assistance to authorized agencies at least at the first two levels of the system significantly improves food safety and food culture in the country.
