The relevant draft government decision has already been developed and, according to Moldovan sugar market operators, “has a high chance of being adopted in the near future”.
The draft appeared as a response to the appeal of the Union of Sugar Producers of Moldova UPZM, which claims that massive imports of sugar from Serbia have a great impact on the Moldovan sugar market. Its prices are falling below the cost of locally produced sugar, and Moldovan sugar producers are seeing a sharp decline in sales volumes in the period 2024-2025.
The developers of the draft quota of duty-free supplies of Serbian sugar emphasize that this measure is aimed at protecting the financial stability and economic viability of the Moldovan sugar industry. In their opinion, preferential sugar import quotas are in line with the national legislation and Moldova’s international obligations, including the relevant provisions of the CEFTA agreement.
Some sugar importers do not agree with this conclusion and intend to publicly present their point of view in the nearest future.
