The talks are focused on strengthening bilateral relations and supporting Moldova’s European course, given that Ireland will assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union from July 1.
“Our path to the European Union is a survival strategy, an anchor that keeps us in the democratic world. Our citizens understand that. They voted for Europe three times in two years – in the constitutional referendum, in the presidential election and in the parliamentary elections. Each time, under enormous pressure, they chose Europe. They chose the free world,” Sandu said at a joint press conference with Irish Prime Minister Michol Martin.
On the sidelines of the visit, the head of state will hold a meeting with representatives of the Moldovan diaspora. The event will take place in the evening of April 8. The participants in the meeting are expected to discuss the situation in the country, Moldova’s European course, as well as the role of the diaspora in supporting reforms and state processes.
We shall remind you that recently, the government approved the signing of an agreement between Moldova and Ireland on the mutual recognition and exchange of driving licenses.
The document will allow Moldovan citizens living in Ireland to exchange driving licenses without taking theoretical and practical exams. Similar conditions will apply to Irish citizens in Moldova. The agreement is expected to facilitate the integration of the Moldovan diaspora and access to the labor market. During her visit to Ireland, Maia Sandu signed it, calling the document “a practical step that will facilitate the daily life of thousands of our citizens”.
There are about 30,000 Moldovan citizens in Ireland.
