As ANTA specifies, according to the official press release of the European Commission, the new system will be introduced gradually, within 6 months, at the level of all EU countries and associated countries of the Schengen zone.
At the first entry, once the system is launched, a person’s name, type of travel document, biometric data (fingerprints and facial images), and date/place of entry and exit will be recorded, with full respect for fundamental rights and data protection measures. The EES will identify persons who have exceeded the legal period of stay, as well as cases of document and identity fraud.
The EES is an advanced technological platform that will digitally record the entry/exit of drivers and travelers from third countries, including Moldova. Thus, this procedure will be applied at entry into Romania, both to citizens with short-term visas and visa-exempt persons crossing the external border of the EU, gradually replacing the current passport stamping procedure.
The launch of the new electronic control system at the external border of the Schengen area marks an important step in creating a more secure and efficient border management system, the European Commission said.
