MPs do not want to buy out the port in Giurgiulesti

The parliamentary commission for economy, budget and finance did not have enough votes to support an amendment to the draft budget-2026, which envisages the allocation of up to 1 billion lei (52 million euros) to buy out the controlling stake of the Giurgiulesti International Free Port and return it to state ownership, Logos Press reported.

Port of Giurgiulesti

The initiative, signed by PSRM deputies, is motivated by the strategic importance of the port and the risks for the country’s economic security.

However, the amendment lacked votes in the Commission for Economy, Budget and Finance. Only three MPs voted in favor of it, the rest abstained. Thus, the fate of the project will be decided during the plenary session. But even there it is unlikely that there will be enough votes, as the amendment is opposed by deputies of the PAS party, which has a majority in parliament.

During the discussions in the committee, PAS deputy Dorian Istratii harshly criticized the initiative: “Mr. Burduja (one of the authors of the amendment – editor’s note), do I understand correctly that you are referring to the Giurgiulesti port – the same port that was actually given away for free during the communist rule?”.

He noted that the state receives “a few thousand lei” from the lease and asked: “Do you want to buy it for 1 billion lei?”.

In response, PSRM deputy Petru Burduja parried: “What you are talking about is contrary to national interests. The logistical importance of this port is extremely great and it is in the interests of Moldova”.
