Today, the building at 55 Avenue Franklin Roosevelt in Brussels employs 22 staff: 20 on referral from the ministries and 2 under a service contract. All five offices are fully occupied, with 3-4 workstations in each.
The growth of the staff to 27 and the increase in diplomatic workload, including daily meetings with the European Commission, the EU Council and the European Parliament, create the need for more spacious premises. It is estimated that the Mission will need around 800-1,000 m², including offices, meeting and event rooms, to work comfortably.
The Government has decided to acquire its own building. The selected facility is planned to be located close to key EU institutions to ensure prompt participation in meetings and increase the team’s efficiency.
The purchase will be financed with 81.6 million lei within the Budget Law for 2026, and the investment is expected to pay off within 15 years.
In order to implement the decision, a governmental commission will be set up to choose and approve the best option for the building of the Moldovan mission.
UPDATE 11.02.2026
At a meeting on Wednesday, February 11, a decision was approved to establish a government commission for the identification and acquisition of real estate intended for the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union.
“I would like to point out that countries comparable in size to the Republic of Moldova—both Member States and candidate countries—have a staff of approximately 30-40 people. Therefore, the current capacity of five offices, which employ 22 people, is at its maximum and does not allow them to operate in decent conditions,” explained Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihail Popșoi.
