Moldova’s borders are integrated into Europe’s security systems

This was stated by acting Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nikitin at the summarizing of the department’s work during her mandate. According to her, Moldova now uses the European mechanism for analyzing and preventing security risks, which makes it possible to react before threats cross the state border. The country’s border is now better monitored, better managed and more closely integrated into European security systems.

“We have increased the mobility and interoperability of Border Police units so that teams can react quickly where the situation requires it… We have strengthened the operational capability of the Border Police, increased the coverage and control of the state border, and improved the ability to respond to events in the field. Specialized rapid response structures have been created that can effectively respond to modern challenges, from illegal migration to combating cross-border crime. We have developed air surveillance, a state-of-the-art system that provides a complete and up-to-date real-time picture of the state of the border. The ground surveillance network has been expanded to cover more sectors through intelligent monitoring systems,” said Daniela Misail-Nikitin.

She also noted that the border security has also been considerably strengthened by the consolidation of joint control with European partners and neighboring countries. Coordinated control has been implemented at three crossing points with Romania, while six joint control points are in place on the border with Ukraine, with three more in preparation. “This means faster control and fewer risks of illegal crossings,” Misail-Nikitin specified.

According to her, the cooperation with the European agency Frontex has become strategic. Since March 2022, a total of 722 Frontex corps officers have been deployed to Moldova, and currently 85 representatives of the agency work together with the Moldovan Border Police officers.

Also, she said, the new infrastructure strengthens the operational capabilities of the service: five new sectors of the Border Police have been built, which provides a higher level of protection for citizens and better conditions for officers.

She also said that the exchange of information with European agencies has increased more than tenfold.

Summarizing the results of her work, the head of the Interior Ministry said that over the past two years more than 30,000 violations of the law had been detected.

“Despite the pressure exerted on both the population and the authorities during these sensitive periods, life in the country has proceeded normally. Public order, tranquility and, most importantly, social peace were preserved and ensured,” said Daniela Misail-Nikitin.
