According to the monitoring data of east-fruit.com, during this short period of time, the average wholesale price for watermelons in Moldova ($0.59/kg) was significantly lower than in Ukraine ($0.84). For Ukraine it was a starting price, in Moldova local farmers were selling watermelon for the second week. Probably, due to situational export of this product to Ukraine, watermelon prices on the Moldovan market at the turn of June and July remained at a relatively high level.
By the middle of July, the situation changed dramatically. According to Expert Agroteh company specialist Serghei Alba, at the moment the wholesale price for watermelon in Moldova fluctuates in the range of 6-6.5 lei/kg, in Ukraine it is about 2.2-2.4 lei/kg in terms of currency of the Republic of Moldova. Prices on the Ukrainian market decreased due to the mass arrival of products grown in Odessa and Mykolayiv regions.
As Logos Press previously reported, in Moldova, a larger area was allocated for watermelon plantations in 2025 than last year. However, due to late and prolonged spring frosts, a significant part of melon was lost. As a result, by the time of harvesting, the area of watermelon plantations in the country hardly exceeds 2 thousand hectares.
