Moldova’s record holder under suspicion

Master of Sports Serghei Margiev is the current holder of the Moldovan national record in the hammer throw – 78.72 meters. The athlete’s highest achievements were eighth place at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London, UK, and seventh place at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin, Germany. He also represented Moldova at four Summer Olympics – in 2012, 2016, 2021 and 2024.

The track and field athlete was born in Vladikavkaz (Russia) in 1992, but his professional sports career has been linked to Moldova since his youth. The coach is his father Soslan Margiev. Both of his sisters, Zalina Margiev and Marina Nikisenco, also specialized in hammer throw in their professional careers. Zalina Marghieva is currently the Secretary General of the National Olympic and Sports Committee of Moldova.

Doping widely used in East Germany

Dehydrochloromethyltestosterone (oral turinabol) is an anabolic-androgenic steroid developed in the 1960s and widely used in the GDR. As a derivative of testosterone, it is used to increase muscle mass and enhance performance. It is on the list of banned substances compiled by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
