A draft government decision on the approval of the concept of the public alert system was elaborated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. “In the context of numerous global and regional challenges, the implementation of the public warning system represents a strategic priority for the Republic of Moldova,” the authors note.
The system will work on Cell Broadcast technology and will allow sending warnings to all people in the danger zone directly to their cell phones. It is about messages in case of natural disasters, emergencies or other threats, when people’s life and health may be endangered. The system will be combined with similar systems in the region, such as the Romanian RO-ALERT system.
According to the feasibility study, about €5 million will be needed to set up the system and maintain it for the first five years. Funding will be provided under the project to strengthen disaster risk management and resilience in Moldova, supported by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
After the end of the five-year period, the annual maintenance costs of the system will amount to about 340 thousand euros.
The launch of the system is envisaged within the framework of Moldova’s commitment to harmonize public safety standards with EU requirements. It is expected to be fully implemented by 2027.
