The decree on the beginning of negotiations and approval of the signing of the protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nauru was signed by President Maia Sandu and published in the Official Monitor last week.
Nauru is a tiny island northeast of Australia, located 42 kilometers south of the equator. It has a population of about 12,000 and an area of about 8 square miles (just over 20 square kilometers). Phosphate mining is the country’s main source of economic revenue.
According to Hawaii Public Radio, Nauru authorities recently initiated a procedure to rename the country. According to authorities, the name “Nauru” had been internationally adopted since independence in 1968 because “Naoero” was difficult for foreigners to pronounce.
If the authorities succeed in changing the constitution in the foreseeable future, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry will have to amend the documentation related to the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Also, by a decree of the Moldovan President, negotiations will be initiated and the signing of protocols on the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Chad and the Democratic Republic of East Timor will be approved.
