The Moldovan minister discussed the possibility of building an IHR in Moldova at a meeting with representatives of the US Nuclear Energy Institute.

“Representatives of the institute expressed their willingness to make their expert contribution to the development of Moldova’s technical potential in this field,” the Moldovan Ministry of Energy said.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency website, MMRs are modern nuclear reactors with a capacity of up to 300 MW per power unit, which is about one-third of the capacity of traditional nuclear power reactors. Given their small footprint, SMRs can be placed in locations not suitable for larger nuclear power plants.

The construction of an SMR on Romanian territory has been under discussion between the Romanian government and the United States for the fourth year. For this purpose, the United States has allocated $14 million for design studies together with the American firm NuScale Power. The first such energy complex in Europe is going to be located at the former thermal power plant Deucesti in Dymbrovica county. It is expected to have six modules.
