The Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization notes that the purchase of the Giurgiulesti International Free Port is accompanied by the commitment of the Romanian National Company “Administration of Maritime Ports of Constanta” (Compania Naţională Administraţia Porturilor Maritime SA Constanţa) to its long-term development through investments. The state expects that these investments will contribute to strengthening the strategic position of the port in the Black Sea and Danube basin region.
At the same time, the authorities do not support the idea of the state buying a controlling stake in this strategic facility.
Earlier, a group of PSRM MPs proposed to allocate 1.05 billion lei (about 52 million euros) from the state budget for the purchase of the controlling stake in the company operating the Giurgiulesti International Free Port, motivated by the need to return the strategic asset under the state’s control. In their opinion, the deal on the sale of the port operator, previously managed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), to a Romanian state-owned company requires additional evaluation by the state.
The Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization drafted a negative response to the initiative, stating that the proposed sources of financing are “unrealistic”.
As a reminder, on February 12 this year, the EBRD announced the completion of the sale of the port operator Danube Logistics to Compania Naţională Administraţia Porturilor Maritime SA Constanţa, a Romanian state-owned company.
