Moldova becomes a prominent player in European historical tourism

According to Travel and Tour World (TTW), a global media platform that brings together the international travel community, Moldova has joined the leading European destinations: Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Greece, Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the UK. This marks a notable change on the European tourist map: countries are joining efforts to promote their cultural and historical heritage, and Moldova, which previously remained in the shadows, is now attracting the attention of tourists from all over the world, thanks to its ancient monuments and unique flavor.

The TTW analysis notes that the capital Chisinau with its Soviet-era architecture and quiet parks, the 12th century cave monastery Orheul Vechi, the medieval Soroca Fortress and the Cricova underground wine galleries are just some of the country’s historical attractions.

Citizens of more than 100 countries can visit Moldova without a visa for up to 90 days, making it an affordable destination for spontaneous trips. The best time to visit is spring and fall, when nature reveals its full scenic potential.

“Moldova is a hidden gem of Europe, where rich history, picturesque nature and warm hospitality are combined,” TTW notes.

Experts believe that the strategic promotion of Moldova as a historical destination can strengthen its position on the global tourist map and make the country a prominent player in European tourism.

Recall that in spring 2023, Moldova joined the Council of Europe’s Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes, which brings together 36 states. This creates opportunities for cooperation with other European countries in promoting historical and cultural heritage.

As noted in a recent interview for Logos Press, Culture Minister Cristian Jardan, Moldova’s historical monuments are beginning to attract investment: there are plans to identify sites with economic potential and develop public-private partnership models. “In the context of the growth of host tourism, this heritage is beginning to be of increasing investment interest,” the minister emphasized.

It should be noted that the government plans to return tourism to the structure of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization as a separate direction.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in January-September 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, the number of tourists staying in collective accommodation facilities increased by 9.6% – up to 400 thousand people, of which 53% are foreigners. The number of overnight stays increased by 4.9% to 1.28 million, with 32% of them being non-residents. The average duration of stay amounted to 4.2 days.
