The agency specified that the agreement signed the day before by the Ukrainian operator Naftohaz and the Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR on test gas supplies through the Trans-Balkan corridor (news about it here) opens the way for the supply of “blue fuel” to Moldova as well.
“We have been working for a long time to include Moldova in the “vertical gas corridor”, and the agreement of Naftogaz with the Azerbaijani state-owned company opens the way for the supply of Azerbaijani gas along this route as well,” the Energy Ministry specified.
In April, during his visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the 11th ministerial meeting of the Advisory Council on the Southern Gas Corridor, Moldovan Energy Minister Dorin Jungietu said that Moldova was interested in Azerbaijani gas supplies to ensure its own energy security.
“Sustainable diversification of supply sources, including gas imports from Azerbaijan, will allow Moldova to meet its energy needs,” the minister said. According to him, Chisinau is “fully committed” to the Southern Gas Corridor project and is interested in developing the so-called “vertical corridor” for gas supplies further to Moldova.
“We are the first country to commercialize the Greece-Bulgaria gas interconnector. Natural gas will continue to play an important role in Moldova’s energy structure,” Jungietu added. The minister emphasized that energy security, sustainability and market integration remain key priorities for the republic.
