Next in the top ten in terms of the ratio of defense spending to GDP are Israel (8.8%), Algeria (8%), Saudi Arabia (7.3%), Russia (7.1%), Kuwait (4.8%), Poland (4.2%), the United States (3.4%), Colombia (3.4%) and Greece (3.1%).
In 2024, the entire world spent 2.5% of its GDP, about $2.7 trillion, on military spending.
On average, countries affected by armed conflict will spend 4.4% of their GDP on military spending in 2024, compared to 1.9% in countries not involved in hostilities, SIPRI analysts wrote.
Moldova’s GDP in 2024 amounted to 323.8 billion lei. Moldova’s 2024 budget allocated 1.96 billion lei for the defense sector, 262 million lei more than in 2023 (in which military expenditures record a 68% increase). In November 2024, defense spending was increased by another 9.3 million lei (+0.5%).
In other words, military spending in relation to GDP last year amounted to about 0.6%.
The country’s leadership plans to increase these expenditures to 1-2% of GDP.
