The head of state emphasized that these results, “still fragile but valuable,” are largely the result of the work of “honest and dedicated people” in the system, in the context of a major reform launched several years ago.
“However, it must be recognized that there is still much work to be done before the entire judicial system is imbued with the spirit of justice. For the smooth functioning of justice, the integrity assessment process needs to continue. Further action is required in areas such as court and resource management, increasing the responsibility of judges, harmonization of judicial practice and training,” Sandu told the judges.
At the same time, the president emphasized that the justice reform is being carried out “not at the request of external partners, but first of all for the sake of citizens who want the law to be respected and applied fairly.”
Maia Sandu drew attention to the significant number of vacancies, especially at the level of appellate courts, emphasizing that the reform should not be compromised by hasty appointments: “To see the reform through, we cannot allow vulnerabilities caused by quick and superficial appointments.”
According to the president, there is a more positive trend in the handling of corruption cases.
“Their correct resolution contributes not only to reducing corruption, but also to protecting national security,” Sandu said.
At the end, the head of state emphasized that the development of the judicial system is crucial for Moldova’s European course, and every decision taken with integrity and professionalism brings the country closer to the European Union.
It should be noted that the General Assembly of Judges took place against the background of the visit to Moldova of Michael McGrath, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law and Consumer Protection. During his visit, a new project was announced, aimed at equipping the courts, developing an integrated case management system and widely implementing the e-Dosar Judiciar information system. The €5 million project will be funded by the European Union.
