Local budgets recorded a surplus of 1 billion lei

Despite the complaints of local authorities about the lack of finances, the execution of local budgets in January-February 2026 ended with a surplus of 980.0 million lei. And their revenues noticeably exceeded their expenditures.

This is evidenced by the data of the report of the Ministry of Finance on the execution of the components of the national public budget as of February 28, 2026.

The total revenues of the local budgets for January-February 2026 amounted to 5, 263 billion lei. Compared to the same period of 2025, they increased by 15.4 per cent (704.1 million lei).

Out of this amount, the local public authorities’ own revenues were recorded at 1.596 billion lei, up by 15.4 per cent (212.5 million lei) against the same period of the previous year. The transfers from the state budget reached 3,667.6 million lei. This is 15.5 percent (491.6 million lei) more compared to last year.

Plus grants, which this year went to the local budgets in the amount of 7.1 million lei against 0.5 million lei sent there in the first two months of last year.

At the same time, the expenditure item was realized in the first two months of this year in the amount of 4.283 billion lei, which is 11.9 per cent (456.2 million lei) more than in the same period of 2025.

The execution of local budgets ended with a surplus of 980.0 million lei. The balances on accounts as of February 28, 2026 amounted to 4,173.7 million lei. Of these, 92.0 million lei are funds from projects financed from external sources.
