Latvian leadership did not congratulate Orthodox Christians on Easter

In official Latvia, the Resurrection of Christ was celebrated this year on April 5. This is probably why the accounts of the country's leaders do not mention one of the main holidays, which the Orthodox inhabitants of Latvia widely celebrate on April 12.

Easter

“Not our holiday” – this is how Latvian portal bb.lv titled the information about it. Christianity prevails in Latvia, but the majority of the population is Lutheran, which is due to strong historical ties with the countries of Northern Europe and northern Germany. In the second place are Catholics. Catholicism is widespread in eastern Latvia due to Polish influence.

The Latvian Orthodox Church is the third largest denomination in Latvia, whose adherents, in turn, are mainly Russian-speaking population.

According to the Latvian Ministry of Justice, the Orthodox are one of the largest religious groups in Latvia, comprising approximately 13% of the country’s population.

In turn, sociological surveys in the past showed that about every fourth resident of Latvia identifies himself with Orthodoxy (25-26%). That is, from 200 to 500 thousand people were left without congratulations from the country’s leadership, states bb.lv.
