Largest robbery in German history: up to 90 million euros stolen

On New Year's Eve in the city of Gelsenkirchen in western Germany, robbers drilled through the wall of the Sparkasse bank, breaking into about 3.2 thousand cells. According to police, several thousand safes have been broken into, with damage running into tens of millions of euros. Witnesses saw men with large bags on the stairs of a multi-level parking lot.

Surveillance footage showed a black Audi RS 6 leaving the parking lot, with the men inside wearing masks. The license plate of the car had been previously stolen in Hanover. The police recognized the robbers’ actions as “very professional”.

According to the agency Dpa, stolen money, gold and jewelry totaling about 30 million euros. It is difficult to accurately assess the damage, as the contents of the cells were often secret. The bank itself noted that each of the safes was insured for up to 10,300 euros.

The Associated Press news agency reported, citing police, that the amount of damage was estimated at between 10 and 90 million euros. The media called it one of the largest robberies in the history of Germany.

Disgruntled customers gathered outside the bank building. Many said that their losses significantly exceeded the amount of insurance. In total, about 2.7 thousand people were affected.
