The statement was made on April 24, at a joint press conference of the distinguished guest and Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chisinau.

In her speech, the head of state said: “Our joint projects with the European Union make people’s lives better and help us maintain peace and security. Thanks to the EU support, we are better prepared to face threats from outside the country. Soon Moldova, with the support of the European Union, will receive equipment that will protect our citizens from Russian drones that violate our airspace and even fall on the territory of the country, endangering people’s lives, homes and our infrastructure. We are a peaceful country. We do not want war. But we have an obligation to protect our peace and security, to protect our citizens. And the European Union is investing precisely in this fundamental right – the right of every citizen to live in safety. For this and for your personal commitment to Moldova, we thank you”.

Ms. Kallas accused Russia of direct interference in Moldova.

“Russian pressure has been and remains constant,” said Europe’s top diplomat. – For this reason, the EU continues to support Moldova to strengthen its security. We have agreed on an additional package of 60 million euros for Moldova as part of efforts to strengthen its resilience to external threats. This assistance also relates to defense capabilities to prevent Russian drones and missiles from falling on Moldovan territory, which endanger lives. In total, this assistance through the European Peace Facility will reach about 200 million euros. In addition, we will try to protect the integrity of electoral processes. At the request of your authorities, the EU will appoint a rapid response team to support efforts to counter hybrid threats and disinformation. We value very highly the security of the Republic of Moldova. Your security is our security”.

Kaja Kallas said that purchases for the Moldovan armed forces worth 60 million euros will start very soon. However, she found it difficult to answer the question about when the arms would arrive, citing market restrictions.

Also, the EU high representative noted the great progress registered in Moldova on the path of accession to the EU. “You have taken impressive steps in fighting corruption, in promoting reforms in the justice sector. It is vital to maintain the speed of reforms. The EU will be by Moldova’s side at every stage of your path towards a quality EU member,” Ms. Kallas assured.
