On his way to the final, Vadim Gimbovsky passed Björnsson Adalstein (Iceland) and Dan Koncilia (Croatia). In the 1/4 finals he was defeated in a duel with Derek Marczak from Poland, but in the additional qualifying round he defeated Serbian Boris Rutovic and earned the right to compete for the bronze medal.
In the small final, the 20-year-old Gimbowski defeated Russia’s Alexey Bulgakov, who competed under a neutral flag. The second bronze medal was won by Luca Javakhishvili of Georgia. The European champion in the category up to 90 kg became the representative of Italy Cristiano Minchinesi, who in the grand final defeated Marciac, the offender of the Moldovan judoka.
At the European Youth Judo Championship 364 athletes (165 girls and 199 boys) from 43 countries took part. There were 14 sets of medals (seven medals each for both sexes).
