The athlete became an eight-time Olympic champion. He has caught up with his compatriots Ule-Einar Bjørndalen (biathlon), Marit Bjørgen and Bjørn Daly (both ski racing) in terms of the number of top medals at the Winter Olympics.
Klebo covered the distance in 20 minutes 36.2 seconds. France’s Mathis Delage finished second, 4.9 seconds behind the winner. The Olympic bronze medalist was Norway’s Einar Hedegaert, who needed 14 seconds more than the winner.
Moldovan skier Iulian Lukin, a 21-year-old debutant of the Games, took 96th place among the 111 finishers of the race. He was 6 minutes 14.8 seconds behind the Olympic champion.
Klebo makes history
Johannes Klebo could become the most prominent Olympic champion already at these Games. The men’s relay will take place on Sunday, February 15, followed by the team sprint on February 18 and the 50km classic mass start on February 21.
If he wins at least one of these events, he will go down in Olympic history as the athlete with the most gold medals won.
