As reports Business Insider in a March 28, 2026 article, the billionaire has been in discussions with the head of Meta about participating in the $97.4 billion deal.

Correspondence revealed an unexpected alliance

According to court filings, Musk personally wrote to Zuckerberg offering to join a consortium of investors to buy OpenAI’s intellectual property. This happened before the entrepreneur officially put forward an offer to acquire the company.

The correspondence shows that despite the long-standing public confrontation, there was a working dialog between the businessmen. Zuckerberg did not reject the idea immediately and offered to discuss it over the phone, but in the end Meta did not join the deal, the publication specifies.

Musk later filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, demanding compensation of up to $134 billion and accusing the company of deviating from its original non-profit mission.

Experts note that the attempted merger of two major technology players is indicative of growing tensions in the artificial intelligence industry. A potential deal of nearly $100 billion could have changed the balance of power in the market. However, Zuckerberg’s refusal showed that even in the face of increasing competition, industry leaders are not ready for strategic alliances.

The situation also emphasizes the scale of the confrontation around OpenAI: the decisions made within this conflict are already affecting the multi-billion-dollar AI market and may determine its further development.
