
According to the Ministry of Environment, the equipment will be installed in 18 localities in the country. The new types of stations will provide real-time data on temperature, precipitation, humidity and river levels, thus contributing to:
- improving weather forecasts and early warning;
- making quick decisions in the event of extreme events;
- assisting farmers in choosing the best time to sow, irrigate or harvest crops;
- efficient water management.
The initiative also aims to increase the resilience of the agricultural sector to climate change and extreme events.
Seven modern meteorological stations, fourteen soil temperature and humidity sensors, five hydrological stations for the settlements of Cismicoy, Congaz (ATU Gagauzia), Ciumai, Tvardita (Taraclia), Cainar (Causeni), Hincesti, Giurgiulesti, Vulcanesti, Ceadir Lunga, Basarabeasca, Cahul and Leova were purchased with the support of the Government of Japan and UNDP Moldova.
Another six automatic hydrological stations located in the Dniester River basin in the settlements of Ungur (Ocnita district), Soroca, Senateuca (Floresti district), Criuleni, Vadul lui Voda and Răşcaeți (Stefan Voda district) were modernized with support from Sweden and UNDP. The stations are additionally equipped with rain gauges and air temperature and humidity sensors.
