Health insurance costs are growing faster than revenues

Health insurance "closed" February with a deficit. In the first two months of the current year, the expenditures of the health insurance funds grew faster than the revenues. As a result, the fulfillment of obligations was completed with a deficit of 1.232 billion lei.

According to the information of the Ministry of Finance on the execution of the national public budget components, the total revenues of the mandatory health insurance funds in January-February 2026 amounted to 1,835 billion lei. Compared to the same period of 2025, they increased by 11.9% (194.5 million lei).

At the same time, the expenses and non-financial assets of the mandatory health insurance funds in January-February 2026 reached 3,067 billion lei, up by 13.3% (358.9 million lei) compared to the same period of the previous year.

Accordingly, as of February 28, 2026, the fulfillment of obligations by the compulsory health insurance funds ended with a deficit of 1,232 billion lei.

The balance of funds on the accounts of compulsory health insurance funds as of February 28, 2026 amounted to 1,088.6 million lei.
