Growing interest in eco-friendly vehicles

More than 87,000 electric and hybrid vehicles have been registered in the Republic of Moldova from 2018 to the end of 2025. The accelerated growth of registrations confirms the growing interest of the population and the business environment in energy-efficient and environmentally friendly transportation solutions, Logos Press reported.

Of the total number of registered vehicles, electric vehicles account for 11.2%, namely 9,849 units, of which 7,768 are registered by individuals and 2,081 by legal entities. The hybrid car segment (including plug-in hybrids) accounts for 88.8% – 77,985 units, of which 68,032 are owned by individuals and 9,953 by legal entities.

Comparative data shows impressive growth in recent years. According to information from the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED), processed on the basis of statistics from the Public Services Agency (ASP), between 2020 and 2024, the number of electric vehicles will increase 16.4 times and hybrid vehicles 5.9 times.

The year 2025 marked a record high with 30,567 electric and hybrid vehicles registered in a single year. Compared to 2024, the increase recorded in 2025 was approximately 35% of all electric vehicles and 31% of all hybrid vehicles for both ownership categories, underscoring the accelerating transition to sustainable, green mobility.

Individuals registered 3,418 electric vehicles and 22,790 hybrid vehicles in 2025, a significant increase from the previous year. At the same time, legal entities registered 647 electric vehicles and 3,712 hybrid vehicles.

According to the Mobility Strategy of the Republic of Moldova, by 2030 the share of electric and hybrid cars should reach 15% of the total number of cars. By the end of 2025, the share of energy efficient transport amounted to 6.92%, which shows continuous progress, but also the need to continue efforts in this area.
