Such an amendment to the regulatory framework was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Recall that the Grand Prize for special merits in the winegrowing and winemaking field, also known as the Grand Prix, is awarded on the basis of a government decree and is presented annually on Wine Day, starting from 2002 (except for 2021). Applicants are selected by a special commission established under the Ministry of Agriculture.
In addition, the new rules of the contest envisage awarding the main prize to the best representatives of the winegrowing and winemaking region in two new categories. In particular, in addition to the Grand Prix to the best winemaker, the contest will award the best producer of author’s wine, as well as the prize for the best divine. Some criteria for selecting the winners have also been adjusted.
As noted by the authors of the legislative amendment, over the years of this competition, out of 255 companies entered in the winegrowing and winemaking register, large companies have repeatedly received the Grand Prize, while small companies could not compete with them. Thus, the expansion of the award categories will increase the motivation of small producers as well as companies that produce wine-based products.
The Grand Prix for Special Merit in Viticulture and Wine has been awarded twice to Cricova (in 2002 and 2017) and Chateau Vartely (in 2009 and 2023). Vinăria Purcari has won it four times – in 2008, 2012, 2022 and 2024.
