The service is already available to all users with a personal ChatGPT account and combines the power and capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) with the familiar workflows of scientists.
According to Kevin Vail, OpenAI’s vice president of scientific products, Prism has the potential to be a breakthrough product to accelerate scientific research: “I think 2026 will be to AI and science what 2025 was to AI and software development,” he was quoted as saying in a company press release.
The developer said Prism is a cloud-based workspace where researchers can write, edit and collaborate on scientific publications in LaTeX format without leaving a single platform. Unlike traditional editors or standalone AI chatbots, Prism integrates GPT-5.2 directly into the workflow, allowing the AI to understand the structure of the entire paper – text, equations, references and graphs – and help contextualize the entire document.
The service supports unlimited projects and co-authors, allowing large scientific teams to simultaneously work on an article or study, comment and make changes in real time.
As the OpenAI team notes, in addition to basic editing, Prism offers automatic formatting tools, logic and grammar checks, citation assistance, and even a scientific literature search right inside the document.
Importantly, Prism is also completely free for anyone with a personal ChatGPT account. There are no paid subscriptions or limits on the number of users. This makes it accessible to undergraduates, graduate students, and independent researchers. That said, the developer said that more advanced AI features may appear in future paid ChatGPT plans for business and education.
