As a reputable French publication notes, it is increasingly being questioned whether Chisinau is maintaining its course of democratic reforms or whether an authoritarian model of governance is gradually taking shape in the country under outwardly pro-European rhetoric.
The key reason for such assessments is the growing strategic partnership between Paris and Chisinau. France provides significant support to Moldova – from humanitarian and economic aid to supplies of military equipment, including personal equipment, logistics and small arms. However, against the backdrop of internal political tensions, the question arises: is this assistance being used for its intended purpose and is it in line with the stated principles of the rule of law?
The activities of the Security Information Service (SIS), in particular its units acting under the pretext of protecting national security, are attracting increased attention. According to Romanian journalists, there are cases of pressure on opposition politicians and former allies of the authorities in the country, which calls into question the real commitment to democratic norms.
Paris, which traditionally advocates the protection of human rights and the rule of law, is increasingly facing the need to rethink the format of interaction with Chisinau. Expert circles emphasize that strategic partnership should not replace the value basis of relations, especially when it comes to democracy, transparency and institutional independence. Without an objective assessment of what is happening, there is a risk that French support will be used to strengthen the government rather than to promote democratic reforms.
