Forța Fermierilor again demands a state of emergency in agriculture

If precipitation does not fall in the next one or two weeks, many corn and sunflower crops in other areas in the south and center of the Republic of Moldova will suffer the same fate. Following the loss of crops, “agricultural producers will be on the verge of extinction”, according to the Forța Fermierilor Association.

In a press release, it proposes to the government to urgently: reimburse the VAT accumulated by agricultural producers, return the excise duties paid by them on diesel fuel, apply realistic special programs to increase resilience to climate change, and declare a state of emergency in agriculture.

The association believes that “the government’s proposal to train farmers to grow sorghum on 1-2 hectares in order to feed poultry with this grain and not to starve to death” cannot be taken seriously as a drought mitigation measure.

This is the third time this year that the Forța Fermierilor Association has demanded that the authorities impose a state of emergency in agriculture. At the beginning of 2025, the reason was given as the difficult financial situation of farmers after a poor harvest last year. In spring, Forța Fermierilor (as well as Moldova Fruct) considered the April frosts to be a sufficient reason to declare a state of emergency. Now the “hot reason” – July drought and alarming forecasts for August.
