Farmers hope to harvest about 120,000 tons of sweet beets from the frozen ground to be processed at sugar factories in Cupcinj and Drochia, according to a report by europalibera.org.

The beet crop was harvested on 11,500 hectares in the fall, but bad weather conditions left beets on 3,000 hectares, the story noted.

“This is the first time in 27 years that harvesting work has been delayed until mid-winter,” said Alexei Chiriac, chairman of the Sugar Beet Producers Association.

Farmers continue to work, although at night the temperature drops below -20 °C, and during the day the ground slightly “warms up” at -13 °C.
