The licensing mechanism for Ukrainian imports of the aforementioned agricultural products to Moldova expires at the end of June. Farmers motivate the expediency of extending it at least until the end of this year for several reasons. In particular, the fact that “in Moldova, rapeseed crops for the harvest-2025 have tripled”.
Earlier, Logos Press, referring to the assessment of the Association of Grain Exporters Agrocereale, reported that the agricultural area under rape in Moldova reached a record level – about 100 thousand hectares. Currently, the state of crops is assessed by many operators of the Moldovan oilseed market as “good and very good”. It is quite possible that the country will have a high harvest of this product. Logos Press also noted that Floarea Soarelui SA, the largest oil and fat enterprise in Moldova, plans to resume its activity this year with rapeseed processing.
In this situation, Moldovan farmers believe that rapeseed from Ukraine poses a serious danger. Because of the potential import of this raw material for processing in Moldova, local producers may not receive the average regional market price for their rapeseed. Leaders of farmers’ organizations point out that barrier licensing has previously “fully proved its effectiveness as a tool to protect the domestic market from unfair competition”.
However, it is worth recalling that the “side effect” of the barrier licensing of cheap oilseeds from Ukraine was the two-year technical downtime of Floarea Soarelui SA and unprecedentedly high exports of Moldovan sunflower in 2024-25.
