At the same time, the physical volume of supplies in June this year is less than the figures for the same month last year – about 8 thousand tons and 10 thousand tons, respectively.
Earlier, Logos Press wrote that, according to the above-mentioned source, in 2024 cherry exports amounted to about 14 thousand tons. Including to the EU countries – 2.3 thousand tons, to the CIS – 11.3 thousand tons. In 2023, more than 16 thousand tons of cherries were exported from Moldova: to the EU – 2.6 thousand tons, to CIS countries and Ukraine – 13.7 thousand tons.
In 2022, 14.2 thousand tons of cherries were shipped abroad from Moldova. That year, for the first time, there was an explosive growth of supplies of these fruits to the European Union – almost 2 thousand tons, 12 times more than in the previous year. The volume of export shipments in 2024 in financial terms – about $18 million, in 2023 – almost $22.3 million, in 2022 – just over $13 million.
In June this year, the geography of Moldovan cherry exports has changed: if last year 84% of deliveries were to the CIS countries, in June this year the share of this group of countries decreased to 70%. At the same time, the share of supplies of cherries from Moldova to the European Union markets increased from 16% to 28%. The biggest buyers there are Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Denmark. Exports to Romania also increased sharply – from 842 tons in 2024 to 1666 tons in June this year.
The problem is that cherry exports this July are unlikely to exceed the June figure. Due to the loss of a significant share of the crop from spring frosts, the cherry sales season will be short.
