According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2024, about 23.3% of households lacked adequate sanitation and used pit latrines, and about 10.2% did not have access to drinking water services. Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to this problem. Regional differences are also significant: the level of water supply connection varies from 52.4% in the northern regions to 84.4% in Chisinau, while for sewerage the figures in most regions remain at 14-21%.
Targets for 2030
The Government has developed a Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Development Program for 2026-2030, aimed at modernizing infrastructure, reducing regional disparities and improving access for vulnerable groups. It is aligned with the “European Moldova 2030” strategy and the UN Agenda goals for the same period.
The total planned cost of the program is 597.65 million lei. Of this, 57.71% is financed from the state budget, 20.99% from external assistance, and 21.28% is not yet covered. The program has a strategic character and creates the basis for further capital investments in the sector.
The document assumes that by 2030 the following targets will be achieved:
– Ensuring that at least 95% of the population has access to safe water supply sources;
– connecting at least 65% of the population to public sanitation (sewerage) services;
– treatment in accordance with European standards of at least 40% of the total volume of wastewater discharged into water bodies.
The program is to be approved at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.
