Taking into account the recently summarized results of the population census, it turns out that at present there is one millionaire for every 300 inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova, whereas 10 years ago this indicator was 1 in 6600.
The combined fortune of the 8,019 millionaires registered last year amounts to more than 28 billion lei. Last year, they paid income tax to the state totaling almost 2 billion lei.
Over the ten years, the number of millionaire fortune holders has increased by an average of 760 people annually. A particularly sharp increase has been registered in the last seven years. In 2020, there were less than three thousand rich people, in 2021 their number exceeded 4,000, and in 2023 it became 6,146.
Data from the State Tax Service show that the youngest millionaire in Moldova is 16 years old, while the oldest is 88. In general, the majority of millionaires are registered in the age category 40-49 years (2761), followed by the age categories 30-39 years, 50-59 years and 60 years and older. The young group of millionaires aged between 18 and 29 is made up of 260 people.
Of the 8,019 millionaires, about 70% are men.
More than 76% (6,120) of Moldovan millionaires live in Chisinau. In the municipality of Balti there are 225 of them. The districts with the highest number of millionaires are Ialoveni (182), Orhei (114) and Straseni (108). In ATU Gagauzia there are 131 millionaires.
Most millionaires work in such areas as IT and technology, consulting, investments and online services.
During the same ten-year period, the absolute poverty rate in Moldova jumped from 25% to almost 34%.
