According to the largest faction of the European Parliament, the European People’s Party, it supports a trade agreement between the EU and the US, but given Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland, approval is impossible at this stage. Therefore, it is necessary to suspend zero duties on American products.
As Bloomberg notes, the EU-US trade agreement that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen negotiated with Trump in 2025 has already been implemented but still needs parliamentary approval. If EPP lawmakers join left-leaning political groups, they will have enough votes to block approval.
Bernd Lange, chairman of the European Parliament’s trade committee, which is helping to oversee discussions on ratification of the trade agreement, emphasized that the national sovereignty of any country must be respected by all partners in the trade agreement. He advocated the use of ACI (Anti-Coercion Instrument).
It should be noted that ACI allows for a quick response to attempts to force the EU or its member states to change policy through trade or financial threats. Among the retaliatory measures, it provides for increased duties, restrictions on government procurement, investment bans and export controls.
