Michelle Iliev explained the reasons behind the decision to postpone the AI bill

Michelle Iliev, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, explained the reasons for this decision. According to her, the European Artificial Intelligence Act has been under review in the European Union itself since December due to its high degree of complexity.

“The recommendation we received yesterday is that and we suspend its adoption this year because it will be simplified and there is no point in making a double effort. It remains to be seen what will be the Commission’s timeline for the adoption of this new act, which has already been under review since December as part of the Digital Omnibus (apackage of technical amendments to a vast body of digital legislation – Logos Press note) issued by the Commission,” Iliev told.

A similar decision was made with regard to the draft law on data management.

Michelle Iliev emphasized that both acts are interconnected: without an updated and harmonized data framework, it is impossible to build an effective regulation of AI.

She suggested that the Commission will simplify these regulations, given that the regulation is now “overregulated”.

“We don’t know how much it will be simplified. Until now, the rules have been very strict in terms of data sharing, data processing consent, data circulation in general – not just open data used by public registries,” the Secretary of State said.

At the same time, she is sure that when the law on AI in Moldova will be adopted, it will affect all sectors of the economy.
