The publication quotes the UN Secretary General’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric: “We continue to closely follow the developments in Moldova and call on all parties involved to refrain from rhetoric or actions that could increase tensions”.

Recall, Eugenia Gutsul was detained on March 25 at the airport in Chisinau before flying to Istanbul. She was charged with financial irregularities in the 2023 Gagauz elections. At the request of the prosecutor’s office, the Bashkan of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days.

Eugenia Gutsul herself considers her arrest as political persecution. She appealed to the presidents of Russia Vladimir Putin, Turkey Tayyip Recep Erdogan and the United States Donald Trump to pay attention to what is happening in Moldova, considering her arrest as pressure on the Gagauz autonomy. She claimed that she was offered to give up her position as head of the region in exchange for her release and permission to leave the country immediately.

The Moldovan authorities and law enforcement agencies deny the political connotation of actions against the Bashkan of Gagauzia.
