The new controls will increase inspections of agri-food products from third countries imported into the EU by 50% over two years. The number of cargo inspections at European border control points will also be increased by a third. The increased control primarily concerns shipments from those countries that have previously been labeled as violators of EU standards.
A special group will be created to implement the enhanced monitoring and control measures. In its work, the main focus will be on the detection of residual pesticide content in agricultural products, as well as on the safety of feed and animal welfare. Incidentally, the rules on “importing products with permissible traces of pesticides banned in the EU” are being updated. An additional 500 inspection officers will be trained to strengthen controls.
As producers and exporters of Moldovan agri-food products note, suppliers of these goods to the European market should take the new EU rules very seriously. First of all, because in the last few years Moldovan farmers have switched from original products to generics for plant protection for reasons of economy.
