According to the latest report by Eurostat. In 2024, the number of naturalizations increased by 12%. In a broader dynamic, the figure has increased by about 55% compared to the mid-2010s, reflecting the subsequent integration of foreigners in the Eurozone.

According to the report, about 88% of those who obtained citizenship were previously citizens of non-EU countries.

The largest groups among the new citizens are those from Morocco, Syria and Albania. Also a significant number of citizenship was granted to the natives of Turkey, Brazil and Russia. In particular, about 31 thousand Russians became citizens of EU countries in 2024, and they chose Germany, France, Spain and Finland.

Top 3 countries in terms of granting citizenship

The distribution of naturalizations remains uneven. Almost two-thirds of all citizenship decisions come from three states – Germany, Spain and Italy. These countries are the main centers of long-term migration and subsequent naturalization.

Other major countries in terms of citizenship granting include France and Sweden.

The report also points to differences between countries in the level of granting citizenship by the number of resident foreigners. The highest rates are recorded in Sweden and Italy, where the share of naturalized foreigners remains one of the highest in the EU.

At the same time, the lowest levels are recorded in Lithuania and Estonia.

Who received a new passport

Naturalization after long-term residence remains the key channel for obtaining citizenship.

Family grounds (including marriage) and citizenship by descent also play a significant role. To a lesser extent, humanitarian and other special grounds.

The majority of new citizens are of working age, predominantly between 25 and 44 years old. The gender distribution remains balanced.

Many of those who received passports in 2024 have resided in EU countries for several years and became eligible for naturalization after meeting the established requirements.
