The main time of the final match ended in a draw (1:1). Spain’s midfielder Mariona Caldentey opened the scoring on 25 minutes, while England’s forward scored the return goal on 57 minutes. Neither regular nor extra time revealed the winner, so the winner was determined in a penalty shootout.

The luckier were the Englishwomen, who realized three penalties out of five (Alex Greenwood, Niamh Charles and Chloe Kelly), while the Spaniards – only one (Patricia Guijarro). The Lionesses thus confirmed the European title they won in 2022 in the final against Germany (2-1 in extra time).

In the semifinals, England defeated Italy 2-1 in extra time and Spain defeated Germany 1-0 in extra time. At the end of the tournament, the English women became two-time European champions, they are also vice-champions of the world (2023). The Spaniards are European vice-champions and 2023 World Champions when they defeated the hosts 1-0 in the final in London.

This year’s Women’s World Cup was hosted by Switzerland. Matches were played in eight cities, with the final held at the country’s largest stadium, St. Jakob-Park, located in Basel. According to UEFA, the final match was attended by just over 34,200 spectators with a capacity of 38,500 seats. The total attendance of the championship amounted to 623 thousand (an average of 20.7 thousand per match).

The officiating crew headed by Frenchwoman Stephanie Frappard officiated the final match. She was assisted in the field by Camila Soriano (France) and Francesca Di Monte (Italy).
