More and more scientists and eco-activists are getting involved in the “eco-battle”. In this regard, the Ministry of Environment and Moldsilva Agency announced the organization of a public roundtable dialogue next year.
Recently, Ilea Trombitski, an ecologist and former MP, widely known in Moldova, joined the camp of critics of the idea of “monocultural afforestation”. “Since the adoption of the Program is firmly associated with President Maia Sandu, I would like to emphasize that the Program is correct and the initiator should not be attacked,” says the expert. – What is wrong is its implementation at the initial stage. We should not run after numbers, but lay a solid foundation – nurseries and methods that allow planting multi-species forests of local species, with irrigation and care. And with a good chance of survival with initial measures to prevent forest fires. This is immensely more difficult than planting acacia, but it leads to positive results. This is where the program should be adjusted”.
In a recently released statement, Moldsilva acknowledges that to date, white acacia has been used as the main species in about 88% of the new plantations being established outside the state forest fund (so-called expansion). At the same time, it is noted that in 2025 its share has decreased to 80%, which is presented as an adjustment of approaches.
Nevertheless, Ilya Trombitsky believes that “the predominant use of acacia … will cause great damage to the hydrological regime, for the sake of the restoration of which the program was designed and 200 million euros have already been received for it with the prospect of further international funding.
